Awake, but lingering in bed one morning, I remembered feelings from days gone by. Feelings which on reflection I think are love. Love gives us something to get up for. I recalled the routines I faithfully followed every single day since the birth of my first child. Getting up to provide for the children: food, bath, clothing, stimulation, comfort, encouragement, reminders…help with anything that is needed. There is no question about doing these things. It comes as naturally as breathing. Love is what compels us to serve our loved ones, and the reward we get is meaning, shape, purpose for our existence. Love creates life, love fuels life, love holds lives together, love makes us endure, love creates the memories we cherish; love is the ESSENCE, that intangible ingredient without which life would not endure.
Albert Einstein expressed it more succinctly without ever using the L word:
Strange is our situation here on Earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other men—above all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness depends.
